The Magic

Duane is married to Therina and they have three daughters. Duane is an accomplished musician (on the drums) and magician and was the South African General Stage Magic Champion in 2002, a title he held for 4 years.

Duane regularly performs magic for corporate functions all over South Africa and has performed at over 2000 occasions including a special show for Nelson Mandela in 1996.

Duane matriculated in 1990 from the Glen High School. He studied medicine from 1991 – 1996 at the University of Pretoria and then specialized as an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon from 1999 – 2003 at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

Medically speaking he has four publications to date. Duane is on the faculty of the International Otology Board of the Causse Clinique in France. He is the South African representative for the LION foundation (Live International Otolaryngology Network) and past chairman of the South African Cochlea Implant Group.

He is part time lecturer for the WITS ENT Department in Otology and also lectures for the department of Audiology, Speech and Hearing at WITS.

Duane runs an annual Otology update course for South African ENT surgeons every 2nd year.

  • First Surgeon in South Africa to implant a Bonebridge hearing device
  • First Surgeon in South Africa to implant a hearing preservation electrode in a child under 10yrs
  • First surgeon in SA (and one of the first in the world) to implant a single sided deafness patient with a Cochlea Implant using a hearing preservation technique for isolated high frequency hearing loss
  • One of the first surgeons in SA to do Bilateral simultaneous Cochlea implants for children under 14 months of age
  • One of the first surgeons to implant the Soundbridge hearing device in South Africa for a Microtia/Atresia patient
  • First Surgeon in South Africa to do a simultaneous Sub-total Petrosectomy and Cochlea implant on the same patient at one surgery
  • First surgeon in SA to do Ketac Cem related middle ear surgery
  • First surgeon known to have done a 4 Ossicle hearing repair

Dr. Mol was the brain child, and driving force behind the new Ear and Eye Clinic. Dr. Mol has a passion for his profession and wants to realise the dream of being able to provide world class facilities to go hand in hand with his experience, at an affordable cost. The realisation of this dream took almost 6 years of hard work. The new clinic is the first of its kind in Southern Africa.
